TNew Date
As discussed at the most recent MSLS Narragansett Chapter meeting, we have a project that the chapter would like to take on.

A Gorham resident found a stone monument laying horizontal under some leaves at the corner of his yard (see Monument Photos.PDF).  N73 is carved on one side and N74 is carved on the other.  He forwarded the information to a state historian who forwarded it to Peter Belanger of the MDOT and MSLS Excom.  Peter provided the information to Matthew Ek of Sebago Technics who presented it to the Narraganset Chapter.

Although the monument is now laying horizontal on the surface, there may be a base section still in the ground if it was broken.  The monument does appear to be near the corner of Lots 73 and 74 as shown on the attached Gorham.PDF.  Matt Ek has provided a USGS Topo quad sheet with the monument location added (attached).  The Found Monument.KLM shows the approximate monument location within Google Earth.

The Gorham resident would like the stone reset and as discussed, we would like the members of the Narraganset Chapter to let us know if they have found any similar monuments in Gorham, or if they have any surveys in the area of this monument that would let us get a better location to excavate for the base.

Those with information regarding this request can forward their response to Matthew Ek at mek@sebagotechnics.com

Annual Chapter Report,

Last year the Narragansett Chapter held six meetings with an average turnout of 12 members per meeting, which is a 33% increase in member turnout over the previous years attendance.  Guest speakers for 2011 included; Ray Philpot of the Windham Historical Society, who presented “Little Sebago Lake: A Lost Landmark” a concise history of North Windham and its impact on the surrounding area, in February, Holly Hurd from the Osher Map Library, presented “Moses Greenleaf, Maine’s First Map Maker” a biography of Moses Greenleaf and post American Revolution settlement in Maine, in September, and Guy Ladd from the Scarborough MDOT office discussed current DOT projects in Cumberland County and the condemnation process, in October.

In March the Chapter participated in the NSPS Surveying USA event.  During the event the Chapter collected GPS observations on both the north and south Meridian Monuments on Portland’s Western Promenade (Bramhall Hill).  Following the NSPS Surveying event, the Chapter met again at the Meridian monuments to collect additional information, in conjunction with the data previously collected, to develop a map, depicting the Meridian Monuments location and other historical information about them.  While the map continues to be updated with the addition of historical information, the Chapter hopes the map will bring awareness to the monuments and their purpose to the area.  The Meridian Monument Survey, upcoming events, and useful web links can all be found on the chapter website at www.narragansettsurveyors.org.
